Gerald Ciolek of Germany is the new under 23 men?s road race world champion after storming to victory in Salzburg on Saturday morning.

Ciolek was part of the decisive six-rider break that formed with two laps to go and then won the title with a powerful sprint. Frenchman Romain Feillu and Alexander Khatuntsev of Russia was third.

Despite a strong chase on the final descent, the bunch finished five seconds behind. Mark Cavendish finished 11th, fifth best in the bunch sprint.

Ian Stannard finished 125th at eight minutes, with Ben Greenwood two places behind him. Geraint Thomas and Andy Tennant did not finish. Thomas crashed on the third lap.
