Philip Hindes: Career profile

Philip Hindes was a surprise inclusion in the British team for the 2012 Olympic Games. At 19, Hindes rode in the team sprint at the 2012 Track World Championships with Jason Kenny and Sir Chris Hoy behind him.

Unfortunately, he swung up at the end of his lap a little too early and the team were disqualified, but what was important was his time for that crucial first lap. He was the fourth fastest out of all 17 riders in the first-man position.

Hindes' inclusion in the 2012 Worlds team was a story in itself. Born in Germany, he had competed for his then country as a junior. But Hindes has a British father who served in the RAF before moving to Germany and marrying a German woman.

Holding dual nationality meant Hindes was eligible to ride for Great Britain, but first the German Olympic administrators had to officially release him - something they apparently weren't too keen on doing.
