Tour de Romandie 2012: Coverage index
The 2012 Tour de Romandie starts in Switzerland on Tuesday, April 24, and concludes six days later on Sunday, April 29.
The WorldTour-level stage race features a mix of terrain - hilly stages for the sprinters and attackers, mountains for the climbers, and a pair of time trials. As such, it attracts Grand Tour stage and overall hopefuls looking to hone their form ahead of the Giro d'Italia in May and Tour de France in July.
Last year, Australian Cadel Evans scooped his second victory in the race - the first was in 2006 - on his way to winning the Tour de France. Evans once again takes to the start line, but a bout of illness in the past two weeks ruled him out of the Ardennes Classics and so he starts the race with unknown form, despite having won the Criterium International in late March.
British squad Sky go into the event with a strong team, and have several options for the overall classification - Paris-Nice winner Bradley Wiggins, 2011 Vuelta a Espana runner-up Chris Froome and Volta ao Algarve winner Richie Porte.
British sprint ace Mark Cavendish is also present with Sky, the first time that he and Wiggins will have ridden together in competition since the Manxman joined the team in the winter.
The final two stages are likely to be the decisive days of the race. The penultimate stage on Saturday features one second and three first category climbs, whilst the final day's racing comprises a hilly 16.5km individual test against the clock.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
