- Nicely presented, making an ideal gift
- Retro styling may not appeal to everyone, but we liked it

We owe Cycling Souvenirs, the makers of this pair of Spring Classics-theme espresso cups and saucers, an apology. They sent us the set before the the Tour of Flanders but a uniform love of coffee in the Cycling Weekly office meant that they mysteriously vanished until the classics had finished.
Now that they’ve reappeared, it’s time to wind up the coffee machine and give them a test run.

Firstly, you notice how light the set is – and a check of the mark underneath, Antiques Roadshow-style, confirms that they are porcelain. One features a Paris-Roubaix design, and the other the Ronde van Vlaanderen – Tour of Flanders.
According to Cycling Souvenirs, the 80ml cups are hand-finished rather than using cheaper digital printing. The two-tone black/yellow designs and typeface have a retro feel, which complements the classic shape of the cups and saucers.
Any good drinking vessel somehow has the ability to enhance the flavour of a well-made beverage, whether that be due to the perfect ratio of surface area to liquid volume or purely in the drinker’s imagination. Either way, the cups certainly passed the test here.
Given the set's obvious appeal to the coffee-drinking, Classics-loving crew at Cycling Weekly we'd say they'd be a hit with anyone with similar tastes. Although at £24 they are fairly pricey, it does make them an ideal and original gift for the cycling coffee nut that has everything.
