Meet the bike co-engineered with Jaguar that Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas will use in the Tour of Flanders

Team Sky has unveiled its secret weapon for the forthcoming Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix: a special edition Pinarello Dogma equipped with cobble-smoothing suspension co-engineered with the help of car manufacturer Jaguar.

Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas and Sky team-mates will debut the carbon-fibre Pinarello Dogma K8-S at the Tour of Flanders on Sunday (April 5).

The bike features a shock at the top of the wishbone seat stays, which they are calling DSS 1.0 or the Dogma Suspension System, affording 10mm of movement. This is designed to soften the blow of riding over cobblestones and help keep the rear wheel tracking over rough surfaces.

Wiggins and team-mate Christian Knees tested out the new bike in March, using the cobbled sectors in the final 130 kilometres of the Paris-Roubaix route as a test bed. The bike has apparently undergone months of testing and performance analysis to ensure it is ready for the Classics.

According to the team, the frame weighs in at competitive 900g. To accommodate the movement of the rear end, Pinarello and Jaguar have created flexible, flat carbon fibre chainstays.

Figures produced by Jaguar show that the new K8-S frame helped ‘create an overall performance increase of 4.6% and 50% improved comfort for the riders over rough terrains from the previous Dogma K model’.

Wiggins has said that he’s a fan of the new frame: “I did all the testing in the winter on the prototype, all the recon in Roubaix, the difference is unbelievable, it’s hard to describe until you are on it hitting the cobbles at full-tilt in Arenberg. This thing changes the whole feel, it’s the first bike that’s made for the race, in terms of aerodynamics. In the past, they added RockShox and other things, but never to this degree with that much time and attention.

“When you get to the end of Carrefour and everyone’s dead, of course, you also have to have the legs, but the bike will make the difference to get there.

“It’s funny, last year, with the F8 there was a lot of hurrah, I think they won one bike race in four months, but it’s not all about the bike as Lance once said, you still have the legs, but this could be the difference between winning and losing.”

Thomas goes into Sunday’s Tour of Flanders as one of the leading favourites, having won E3 Harelbeke and placed third in Ghent-Wevelgem last Sunday. Wiggins has also hit good form ahead of his tilt at Paris-Roubaix on April 12, having won the final time stage of the Three Days of De Panne.

It’s not the first time that teams have employed suspension technology to try and conquer the cobbles of northern Europe: mountain bike fork manufacturer RockShox produced its Paris-Roubaix suspension fork, which was famously used by Gilbert Duclos-Lasalle to win the race in 1992, then again in 1993. Andre Tchmil also won on a bike with the RockShox fork in 1994.

A full suspension bike created by Italian company Bianchi, complete with pivot points and a coil rear shock, didn’t fare so well, with the frame failing during the 1994 Paris-Roubaix under Johan Museuuw. Technical problems and rivals winning on rigid bikes saw suspension fade out of the limelight.

More recently, Specialized has had recent with its Roubaix line of bikes that use viscoelastic ‘Zertz’ dampers built into the frameset to absorb bumps, which has since made them popular with the leisure market. Several other manufacturers have since included similar damping systems in their Roubaix bikes but none quite as bold as the Dogma K8-S.

    that last quote at the end with sir wiggins saying “I’ve never ridden anything like it on cobbles before, which is the most extreme terrain you can ride a bike on.”
    I call absolute BS on that comment! just take a quick trip to youtube and type in redbull rampage and then read that quote. moving out of the realm of mountian biking even xc riders that i know agree that cobbles are a walk in the park as of riding on.

    I’m sorry but why don’t we just pave over the cobblestone’s and send the the whole spirit of such magnificent events like Paris-Roubaix down the toilet. I love the cobblestone classic’s for what they are, “Grueling”. All due respect, but if the likes of team sky prefer an easy ride then maybe they should stay home that day. Maybe hit the bike paths with the kids. Think about the race and what it’s all about. Using suspension in Paris-Roubaix? Come on guys, grow a pair or stay away. Keep the history of the cobblestone classic’s as it should be, Tough, and don’t turn it into something soft by adding suspension. What a joke.

    But it sounds good when Jaguar are mentioned. I know KHS did it too with steel mountain bike frames in the late nineties and few others that I can’t remember the names of. Still can’t wait to hear the retail price though.

    I also think the wishbone suspension with 10-20cm of travel would be great for CX racing. Mainly just for me though. 2 fake hips a fake shoulder and fully fake collarbone makes cross tough to do anymore.

    In fact, that “small breakthrough” is bicycle-specific suspension, which was proven both on and off-road in the early ‘90s. My icon shows the aluminium MTB monocoque and a carbon monocoque road bike was also prototyped. Both were featured on ‘Tomorrow’s World’, several years apart, but they failed to understand that they were made to the same design principle! This failure to grasp the fundamentals is quite common, when a design convention becomes embedded. (for no good reason)

    If Jaguar, Team Sky and Pinarello want to make a ‘full-sus’ race bike, they only have to ask me how to do it. But then, hubris gets in the way . . . it always does.

    Did you know that JLR can’t design a car with no ride/handling compromise? Very strange, but true!

    Hmm, if Team Sky does well, like a podium in Paris-Robaix, we’ll see this as a “winning innovation” and everyone will look at incorporating in their products. If no such podium finish the idea will again fade into obscurity. That’s the fickle mind of sports marketing.

    On the other hand, at some point in time a small breakthrough is all that’s needed to prove or improve something “that we tried years ago and it didn’t work.”

    This article should have been published on April 1st. All the best jokes shroud reality in the smoke and mirrors of an almost plausible story.

    This breaks no new ground. It changes no games. It is as incurably compromised as every other deluded attempt at making ‘independent’ suspension ‘work’. The laws of physics dictate that it (front and/or rear suspension) can never escape the inherent compromise, either in car chassis dynamics or on the bike.

    Moots did it with their titanium frame over 20 years ago, and there have been many similar frames built since then for both road and mountain bikes. Not really the new technology that sky claim it is. But what will be the retail price of the bike to get around the UCI rule that it must be commercially available?
