When Chris Froome swept down the Col de Peyresourde to take victory on stage eight of the 2016 Tour de France he elevated himself higher up the all-time list of British professional road winners.
Froome's victory on Saturday is his 34th pro win, moving him past former Sky team-mate Sir Bradley Wiggins and up to third place behind Mark Cavendish and Chris Boardman.
>>> The all-time list of British pro winners
Froome has found success on the road relatively late on in his career, having only really started building up victories as he joined Team Sky when the British WorldTour squad was formed in 2010. His first win was a stage of the Vuelta a España in 2011, then a stage of the Tour in 2012 – the year Wiggins won.
The all-time list of British pro winners
1. Mark Cavendish (2007-present) - 140 wins
2. Chris Boardman (1993-1999) - 41 wins
3. Chris Froome (2007-present) - 34 wins
4. Bradley Wiggins (2003-present) - 33 wins
5=. Malcolm Elliott (1987-1995) - 31 wins
5=. David Millar (1997-2014) - 31 wins
7. Tom Simpson (1959-1967) - 24 wins
8=. Barry Hoban (1964-1978) - 21 wins
8=. Michael Wright (1962-1973) - 21 wins
8=. Jeremy Hunt (1997-2012) - 21 wins
11. Robert Millar (1983-1995) - 16 wins
From 2013 onwards, Froome became Tour leader in his own right and the wins have rapidly accumulated, including victories in Critérium du Dauphiné, Ruta del Sol, Tour de Romandie, Tour of Oman, Herald Sun Tour and his two Tour overall wins in 2013 and 2015.
Cavendish is the outright leader with an astonishing 140 pro victories since 2007, including the three stages of the Tour that he chalked up in the 2016 race's opening week. Cavendish has now won 29 stages of the Tour.
Boardman clocked up 41 pro wins from 1993 to 1999.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, n exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
