Menchov refuses to celebrate Giro success before final time trial
Danilo Di Luca admitted defeat in the Giro d'Italia after slipping to 20 seconds behind Denis Menchov on Saturday but the quiet Russian refused to celebrate victory at the centenary Giro a day early.
“I can’t say I’ve won until I cross the finish line in Rome,” he said.
“I can’t say I’ve won because I’ve got to respect my rivals. I haven’t got three minutes so I can’t relax and go for a stroll in the time trial. The times are tight and so I’ll be going flat out.”
PSYCHOLOGICAL TIME BONUS
Menchov proved perhaps any reasonable doubt that he deserves to win the Giro by beating Di Luca in the intermediate sprint during Saturday’s stage.
LPR tried to set up the little Italian but Menchov jumped past him early, finished second behind Petacchi and gained two psychologically important seconds on Di Luca.
“I can’t remember the last time I sprinted like that. Maybe it was first time in my pro career that I sprinted for a bonus,” he joked.

“I didn’t plan to go for the sprint but I saw that LPR was going after it, so I followed them and then I noticed there wasn’t far to the sprint and so I went for it.”
“I don’t usually go for sprints but they decided to go to war, so I had to do it as well. It’s good to get it before the time trial. I think gaining time was a psychological blow.”
Menchov was not worried about the risk of rain during the time trial and named Levi Leipheimer (Astana) as his favourite to win on the technically demanding course around the spectacular centre of Rome.
Menchov perhaps forgot about Britain’s Bradley Wiggins, his Garmin team mate Dave Zabriskie and 2008 final time trial winner Marco Pinotti (Columbia).
He also didn’t know that Leipheimer was seen loading a big pizza box into the Astana getaway car he shares with Lance Armstrong for the trip to the hotel after each stage. Leipheimer might be busy digesting a large ‘Margherita with extra cheese’ on Sunday afternoon rather than targeting the stage victory.
