Have you joined the e-bike revolution yet?
Going electric may just be the biggest thing to happen to cycling since the demise of the penny farthing, and there are plenty of good reasons to bring some extra power to your rides.
As well as being better for the environment, e-bikes win out over cars when you’re getting around town because you can dodge traffic and bring some much-needed fresh air into your life. Compared to conventional bikes, meanwhile, few of us are going to turn down a bit of assistance when we’re climbing up hills – especially if we’re carrying any kind of load.
There is a but, however. According to leading e-bike brand Himiway, battery range is one of the biggest concerns preventing cyclists from taking the plunge and going electric. Other potential converts cite the perceived expense as an obstacle.
But, since the company was founded in 2017, Himiway have been on a mission to get as many people as possible using e-bikes – and last year the number of cyclists riding Himiway products topped 100,000. So, having made their name focussing on off-road, all-terrain and fat-tire e-bikes, Himiway’s exciting new 2023 launches prioritize range and affordability. Here’s everything you need to know about the Himiway Pony, the Himiway Rambler and the Himiway Rhino.
The Pony may be Himiway’s smallest ever e-bike but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on power. Although the Pony weighs a mere 35 pounds (15.9kg), its 300-watt motor allows you to cruise through town at an impressive 20mph (32km/h). This, combined with its convenient size, helps make the Himiway Pony a brilliant and versatile option on your daily commute, or for trips around a town or city.
Its reinforced aluminum frame is strong enough to carry loads of up to 240 pounds (109kg). The 360 watt-hour (Wh) battery delivers up to 22 miles (35km) range when you’re using the throttle alone, meaning you can reach your destination without the worry of arriving drenched in sweat.
The Pony is also small and light enough to be easily carried on public transport or in the trunk of a car, and despite having a total length of just 49 inches (1.24m), the e-bike’s adjustable seat can fit riders from 4’10” (1.47m) to 6’3” (1.91m) in height. And just to prove that the Pony really is for everyone, it’s available in five different colors – pearl white, mint green, midsummer yellow, midnight forest and Himi grey – voted for by Himiway’s social media followers.
The Himiway Pony is priced at $649, though it can be pre-ordered for only $599. An 180Wh version of the Pony is also available for just $499, making it one of the most affordable e-bikes you can buy.
If you’re looking for a high-performing and durable e-bike that can go the distance, the Himiway Rhino could be up your street. Its 720Wh battery provides a range of up to 55 miles, placing it ahead of many of its competitors in the city/cruiser e-bike market.
The 500-watt motor packs enough punch to power you along at up to 25mph* (40 km/h), while offering five levels of pedal assist depending on how much effort you want to put in – the more work you do for yourself, the further you’ll get on a single charge.
As well as being reliable, stylish and easy to use, the Rambler is built with some important safety features for your peace of mind. Himiway have made the tail light bigger and brighter to make you more visible when you’re out and about, while the optional hydraulic brakes significantly reduce your stopping distances.
The Himiway Rhino starts at $1,299 for the mechanical brake version, rising to $1,499 if you want hydraulic brakes. A mid-drive option with hydraulic brakes is also available, priced at $2,199.
* The speed will be limited to 15.5mph in the UK to comply with UK regulations.
If range is your priority, Himiway have come up with an ingenious way to give it to you – a second battery. They say that the Rhino is the first ever dual-battery e-bike, and that the combined 1,440Wh capacity of its two batteries is enough to carry you 100 miles (160km) between charges – that’s 50% further than Himiway’s previous longest range models.
The Rhino’s pair of powerful batteries are built into two tubes and equipped with separate chargers so that both can be powered up simultaneously. This cuts charging time in half compared to a single 1,440Wh battery pack.
The Rhino isn’t just about traveling further between charges, however. Riding off road is the Rhino’s natural habitat, with its 9-level speed shift system, hydraulic disc brakes and 4.5” fat tires – which offer a 30% increase in the area of the tread compared to previous Himiway e-bikes – providing you with a smoother, safer ride, whatever the terrain.
And if you’re looking for an e-bike with even more punch, the Himiway Rhino Pro has got you covered. You still get 1,440Wh of energy capacity, of course, but this time those twin batteries are powering a 1,000W mid-drive motor that can deliver a maximum of 160 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. That, allied with a Shimano 10-speed gear shift system, means faster acceleration and even better climbing performance.
In other words, the Himiway Rhino Pro is not only one of the most affordable mid-drive e-bikes you can buy – it’s the ultimate off-road beast.
The Himiway Rhino costs $3,199 ($2,999 for pre-order), while the Himiway Rhino Pro is available for $4,199 ($3,999 for pre-order).
