o vote for Mark Cavendish in BBC’s 2009 Sports Personaity of the Year awards.
British sprint ace Mark Cavendish is one of 10 sportspeople on the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award this Sunday, December 13.
We’re urging all cycling fans, their families, friends and pets to vote for Cavendish during the awards show on BBC One on Sunday, 7-9pm, broadcast live from Sheffield Arena.
Bookies William Hill have slashed the odds on Cavendish winning the 2009 award from 66/1 to 20/1. Some driving bloke called Jenson Button is the firm favourite at 10/11.
Cavendish had a record-breaking year on the saddle, clocking up 23 professional wins in pretty much every race he took part in, including Milan-San Remo, a stunning six stages of the Tour de France, and stages of the Giro d’Italia, Tour of Switzerland, Tirreno-Adriatico, Three Days of De Panne, Tour of California, Tour of Missouri, Tour of Ireland and Tour of Qatar.
In terms of wins, Cavendish was the most successful rider of any nation this year. He also established himself as the most successful British cyclist in history, overtaking Chris Boardman in CW’s all-time list of British pro winners.
If that lot isn’t worthy of anyone’s vote, we don’t know what is. Certainly beats driving around in a car.
