Simon Berogna wins Andover Wheelers Open 10-mile time trial

Simon Berogna cut it fine but did enough to take a narrow victory in the Andover Wheelers Open 10-mile at Picket Piece in Hampshire on Sunday.

The veteran VC St Raphael rider stopped the clock at 20:57, shaving a second off Chris Birch’s time.

East Street Cycles rider Birch was comfortable in second with another veteran, Ray Claridge (GA Cycles), grabbing third with a 21:17, one second ahead of Nigel Pratt.

It proved to be a good weekend for VC St Raphael – the team had another winner at the Macclesfield Wheelers 25 event in Jack Green.

Manchester Wheelers looked to dominate the events held in Goostrey, Cheshire, through Robert Hayes and Simon Morton.

But Jack Green clocked a 55:36, knocking over a minute off Hayes’ time to push them to second and third on the podium.

In Bedfordshire, Matt Sinclair (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) proved victorious in the Bedfordshire Road CC 25 at Tempsford.

He clocked 52-19 to take the win by just 12 seconds from the promoting club’s Simon Norman, while Peter Lawrence (Team Swift) was third, another 14 seconds back. Fastest female was Emily Robertson (Glendene CC), 15th overall with 59-23.

Pete Tadros (In Gear-Quickvit) came out on top in a challenging 25-mile event organised by the Southern Counties CU, which included 22 roundabouts between Horsham and Crawley.

He clocked 51-52 to beat team-mate Conall Yates by 22 seconds, while London Dynamo’s Martin Williamson was over a minute further back in third. Lewes Wanderers rider Tamas Vanderhaas was fastest woman, clocking 1-05-58 to beat Deborah Percival (34 Nomads) by just two seconds.

Steve Kane of Brighton Excelsior and Steve Dennis of East Grinstead teamed up to cruise to first place in the Sussex CA 2-Up.

They covered the 28 miles in 59:49 and Lewes Wanderers duo James Ryan and Robert Rollings couldn’t get anywhere near them, recording a 1:03:34. A3CRG’s veteran pairing of Daryl Barr and Warren Peters were third.

Richard Bickley was home first at the Barrow Central Wheelers 20 in Cumbria on Saturday. His time of 53:18 was enough to secure top spot for Border City Wheelers.

Colin McKenna of the promoting club was second with 54:33 and Julian Pearson (Team Hoppers Rollers) was third with 55:54.

Team Swift racked up their latest victory at the Ravensthorpe CC 10 in Ferrybridge on Saturday. Their veteran rider, Simon Beldon, topped the podium after completing in 21:23.

York Cycleworks completed the top three with Ed Nicholson getting round in 22:38 and Richard Sharp racing round in 23:01.

In Fincham, Norfolk, Kings Lynn CC held their 25-mile trial and it was won by Team Velocity.co.uk’s Daniel Bloy.

The 36-year-old was more than two minutes quicker than his rivals with his 55:54 beating the 58:01 of VC Norwich’s Will Bamber and the 58:42 of CC Sudbury man, Jonathan Weatherley.
