Sylvain Chavanel rises to top of UCI WorldTour ranking

Sylvain Chavanel and Ian Stannard, Milan-San Remo 2013

Sylvain Chavanel (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) has moved to the top of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) WorldTour ranking after another strong performance in Milan-San Remo on Sunday.

Chavanel placed fourth in Sunday's snow-affected edition of Milan-San Remo behind race winner Gerald Ciolek (MTN-Qhubeka). Earlier this month he won a stage and placed fifth overall in Paris-Nice. The Frenchman knocks Paris-Nice winner Richie Porte (Sky) off the the top spot and down into second place.

Milan-San Remo runner-up Peter Sagan (Cannondale) is the week's other big riser, jumping up the WorldTour ranking from 25th to fifth.

Top-placed Briton is Chris Froome (Sky) in seventh place after coming second in Tirreno-Adriatico. Geraint Thomas (Sky) is ninth, with British road race champion Ian Stannard (Sky) entering the ranking in 21st after placing sixth in San Remo. Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma) moves up to 31st place after coming ninth in San Remo.

Stannard and Cavendish's extra points mean that Great Britain moves up the WorldTour country ranking from fifth to third behind Spain and the United States.

Sky hangs on to its lead in the team ranking, with Omega Pharma jumping to second and RadioShack in third.

The next counting events in the 2013 WorldTour is Volta a Catalunya in Spain, starting today (Monday, March 18) and finishing on Sunday (March 24). E3 Harelbeke (March 22) and Ghent-Wevelgem (March 24) also take place this week.

The UCI's WorldTour Ranking is compiled using a points system, with points awarded for one-day race, tour stage and stage race overall finishing positions for events in the UCI's WorldTour.

The amount of points awarded depends on the ranking of the event. For example, winning the Tour de France overall gives a rider twice as many points as winning the Eneco Tour overall.

Last year's ranking was topped by Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha). British Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins (Sky) finished in second spot.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
