The German Giant-Alpecin WorldTour team has reported that six of its riders have been hospitalised after a crash during a training camp in Calpe, Spain, today.

Giant-Alpecin issued a statement on Saturday evening confirming that Warren Barguil, John Degenkolb, Chad Haga, Fredrik Ludvigsson, Ramon Sinkeldam and Max Walscheid had all been injured.

"Six Team Giant-Alpecin riders were involved in crash in training during the team training camp near Calpe, Spain, today," said the statement. "During the training ride a car coming the other direction rode into the group of riders head on. The riders were riding side by side on their own side of the road."

"All the riders involved in the crash went to two hospitals and all of them are in stable condition."

Giant-Alpecin team physician Anko Boelens said: "Everyone on the team is in shock right now, and there are some major issues that we need to take care of, but we also realise that we have had some luck on our side."

"Everyone is conscious, stable and approachable, but we are waiting for the latest information and consult the doctors in those hospitals about the treatments needed for the riders."

The team had announced the incident on Twitter earlier on Saturday afternoon.

His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
