Name: Steven Burke

Age: 20

From: Burnley

Disciplines: Track (team pursuit)

Career synopsis: Yet another young talent brought through the GB Olympic Academy Programme, Burke?s specialisation is the team pursuit. Steven took his first medal at the 2005 European Junior Championships, again in the team pursuit.

Some were surprised when Burke was selected for the track ahead of Cummings, but according to GB team manager Dave Brailsford, Burke fully deserves his place, allowing Cummings to focus on the road race and the time trial.

Titles held: 2007 European U23 Champion Team Pursuit

Two things you didn?t know about… Burke is a phenomenal sprinter and in one track sprint training session last year was consistently beating Mark Cavendish. Last year, along with the rest of the Olympic Academy riders, Burke had to do all his own work on his Trek bike. The mechanic Jonny Keegan was only allowed to watch and advise.

What?s your earliest Olympic memory?

Watching Jason Queally in Sydney 2000. That?s my earliest memory and I was really inspired, that kind of got me in to track cycling.

What essentials will you be taking with you?

Just my laptop and my iPod, they?re quite important. I?ll use my iPod on the rollers for my preparation, mainly listening to dance music. Some DVDs and stuff like that.

Which Olympian past or present would you most like to meet?

I?ve already got Bradley in my team!

How will you keep occupied?

Just resting mainly and preparing for the next training session and leading up to race day. It?s vital if you want to perform, there?ll be a lot of that going on.

How will you cope with the heat out there?

I think I?ll be able to cope with it. We?ve got enough equipment and the right nutrition, I don?t think it will be too much of a factor really. If the temperature is hot then it?s all good for the times.

What?s your favourite Chinese dish?

Probably sweet and sour chicken with rice.

What?s the most important things?

The room has to be tidy, I?m quite fussy like that. I like to keep things in order.
