Sharon Laws career profile
Sharon Laws was born to British parents in Kenya - her father was working there at the time. Laws lived in Kenya until she was six, but her father was killed in an accident and the family moved back to Britain and settled in Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds - her mother's home town.
Laws went on to study for a degree in Biology in Nottingham University and then a Masters in conservation in London.
Laws' cycling career started in endurance mountain-biking and multisport racing, something she did alongside her work. In early 2008 Laws finished second in the Australian national road race whilst working in the country for mining company Rio Tinto.
This brought her to the attention of British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford and his head coach Shane Sutton. They subsequently fast tracked her on to the British team and the (now defunct) Halfords Bikehut team, and she went on to ride on the road at the Beijing Olympics.
Having taken a sabbatical from her career and finding instant success Laws decided to continue to focus on her cycling and joined the women's Cervelo test team (which became Garmin-Cervelo a year later) and quickly found her feet in the women's pro peloton.
Not a prolific winner, Laws has become a formidable team mate for her British compatriots Emma Pooley and Lizzie Armitstead. Unfortunately for her she missed out on selection for the 2012 Olympic team that was announced just days before she won her first ever senior title.
After the demise of the AA Drink team, Laws signed up with Belgian squad Lotto-Belisol for 2013.
