Tech news round-up: Polar, BMW and SRAM

It does seem a little early to think about Christmas, let alone burning off mince pies – so maybe the new Polar UK ‘Christmas Campaign’ can be renamed to better suit cyclists’ return to training this Autumn. The popular heart rate monitor manufacturer has launched three ‘motivational’ watches in the form of RC3, RCX3 and the FT7.

In addition to the usual features you’d expect to find from Polar, you’ll also receive post-workout feedback, which will display all the training benefits from your efforts. The FT7, the cheapest of the three, is priced at £93.50, while the RCX3 with heart rate and male/female-specific design will cost £259.50.

If you do get carried away with the miles, the new RC3 has a helpful GPS ‘back to start’ function to get you home – expect to spend around £249.50.


If you happen to be in New York this November get yourself to the SRAM Part Project Gala and Auction. 46 artists collaborate with SRAM to raise money for World Bicycle Relief to help others through the power of the bike. The auction will contain items made from SRAM products with some iconic designs on show. Entry will be $134 which is around £83, the cost of one bike donation.

BMW Cruise
We often cringe when a car manufacturer sends us a press-release promoting an own brand bike. But with BMW’s latest, we thought it was worth a mention. The Cruise was provided by BMW to support the Olympic Torch relay and to help staff travel around the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Games. With internal cabling, five different colours and three different sizes to choose from, it is nice to see some thought in the process and a legacy behind the Games. At £762 it isn’t ridiculously priced either.
