Lizzie Armitstead (Boels-Dolmans) took her first victory of the 2014 season on Sunday, winning the Omloop van het Hageland in Belgium.

Armistead and Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS) had escaped from their rivals to contest a two-way sprint, with the British champion coming out on top. Audrey Cordon (Hitec) completed the podium in third.

It's the second time that Armitstead has won the UCI 1.2-ranked race after claiming the victory in 2012.

"We have worked hard as a team today," Armitstead said after the finish. "I knew I had strong legs in recent races. My goal this season was to win more... and this is a good first result. "

Former Associate Editor

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
