Teenage driver charged over death of Major Gareth Rhys-Evans

Katie Hart, a 19-year-old from St Neots, has been charged in connection with the death of Major Gareth Rhys-Evans who was fatally injured by a car when taking part in Icknield RC "25" on the A1 in Bedfordshire on Sunday morning, May 3.

Hart, of Lakeland Avenue, Little Paxton, appeared at Huntingdon Magistrates Court yesterday (Thursday, August 20), to face a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

She is due to appear at Peterborough Crown Court on Thursday, August 27.

The fatal collision occurred on the southbound carriageway near the B645 Eaton Ford turn-off.

Rhys-Evans, who was 37, died at the scene. He was married with two young children.

Originally from Llandovery, Dyfed, Wales, Rhys-Evans was based at Rheindahlen military base in Germany.

He joined the army aged 25 in 1996, serving with the Royal Artillery before transferring to intelligence. He commanded 12 Military Intelligence Company, part of 1 Military Intelligence Battalion.
