Rob Partridge wins Jock Wadley Memorial road race

Rob Partridge (Velosure-Giordana) went from being dropped to taking victory in the 32nd Jock Wadley Memorial Road Race in Essex on Sunday.

The 28-year-old from Leeds found the pace in the race long breakaway tough, and with three kilometres remaining fell back from the leaders.

But Partridge got a second wind and flew past his breakaway companions, catching them off guard and establishing a big enough gap to take him to victory.

Taking second place just four seconds behind was 24-year-old Adam Blythe (NFTO), while Graham Briggs (Rapha Condor-JLT) was third some seven seconds behind the lone winner.

After the race Partridge said: “It was a pretty hard day out, we were trying to follow the moves from the off because there were a lot of quality teams here capable of doing something.

“The break went after about 40 kilometres, and there were some quality riders in there from few different teams. Eventually it was whittled down to four of us by the finish.

“I was suffering a bit for the last lap or so, and got gapped with three kilometres to go. But I kept going and rode back up to the guys with one kilometre to go. The other guys were all sprinters and were watching each other, and I got a gap and caught them cold.”

It was a great weekend for Velosure-Giordana after Tom Bustard clinched a lone victory on in the Roy Thame Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Bustard was part of a ten-man breakaway which went away in the first few miles of the 75-mile race.

The break built up an unassailable lead before a late attack on the last lap saw Bustard dangle off the front of the leading group before riding clear for victory.

The chasing group behind had been whittled down to five riders and they sprinted out for second place with Adam Duggleby (Wheelbase Altura) leading them home.

Tom Barras (Wheelbase-Altura) secured his first victory of the season in the second round of the North East Spring Cup in Middlesborough.

The 35-year-old from Leeds was the fastest in a four-up sprint finish leading from the final corner ahead of Richard Hepworth (Velosure-Giordana).

Pete Hitt, aged 19, of (VC Meudon) won the Surrey League Road Race. Hitt was victorious in the third category event at the race in 2012 but went one better this year winning the main race.

In the second round of the CDNW series at Saighton Jonathan Cregeen (Team Wallis CHH RT) was the fastest in a three-man sprint.

The first round of the Milton Keynes Bowl series was won by Jamie Scott (WyndyMilla).
