Software update from Japanese components giant could let you control your Garmin without moving your hands from the bars.
Shimano has released updated software that will allow Dura-Ace Di2 shifters to be used as remote control for external devices.
The ST-9070 shifters have been around for a couple of years ago, complete with a button underneath the hood which had previously been redundant. However thanks to the latest software update and the wireless D-Fly unit released earlier this year, these buttons finally have a function.
The most obvious use for this is as a way to scroll through screens on your bike computer, and Shimano states that it is now up to the developers of devices such as the Garmin Edge 1000 to make this feature compatible with their products.
This latest development is part of Shimano’s “stress-free riding” concept which will mean you can see everything you want on your GPS computer without having to take your hands off the bars to swipe through the screens, something which might not seem important in day-to-day riding, but may well appeal to the racer out there.
No word yet on who will be the first company to make use of this new function, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground for any news.
