Laura Trott delighted with 'incredible' Omnium gold at Track World Championships
Laura Trott is understandably delighted with her second gold medal of the Track World Championships, but is disappointed she didn't win her favourite elimination race
Laura Trott said it was “incredible” to win the Omnium world title at the UCI Track World Championships, to take her career total of rainbow jerseys to seven.
The double Olympic champion had already won a gold in the scratch race on Thursday and a bronze medal as part of the team pursuit the following day, but admitted she was happy to secure the rainbow jersey in the event she last won in 2012.
“I’m just so happy, it’s taken me four years to get a gold medal back in the Omnium. It was just incredible,” Trott said.
Having started the final day of racing in second place overall, Trott finished third in both the flying lap and 500-metre time trial, before winning two sprints in the points race, while her nearest rivals marked each other, to secure the title.
“I just felt so good in that [points race]. Paul [Manning, GB women’s endurance coach] said to me before take out the first set of points and you’ll fell confident, you’ll feel comfortable, and that’s exactly what I did,” she revealed.
“After that I could just kind of ride my own race. I wasn’t completely bothered about what was going on with Sarah [Hammer, USA] and with Laurie [Berthon, France] because they were having their own battle.”
Trott admitted she was disappointed to not win the elimination race on Saturday night where she finished second behind Sarah Hammer, in what is her favourite of the six Omnium events.

“I was a little bit disappointed that I didn’t win the elimination race. I rode stupidly really. I should have taken Sarah down to the black line, but I didn’t, I took her up and I kept it fast and that is something that she is good at - she can ride fast and hard. I couldn’t match her.
“The elimination race is my thing, I absolutely love that event and I felt almost like the wind had been blown out my sails a little bit.”
The 23-year-old is now just four world titles off Sir Chris Hoy’s all-time British record of 11.
“I might be able to do four in one go mightn’t I? she laughed. “I could do the Omnium, the team pursuit, the points and the scratch, you never know.”
