Michael Hutchinson wins Hitchin Nomads 25-mile time trial

Six times the National 25-mile champion, Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickvit RT) showed he will start next weekend's title race as favourite when he took a convincing victory in the Hitchin Nomads 25 in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

The 39-year-old, who won the National 10 crown last weekend, is last man off in the 25-mile championships on Sunday. At Guilden Morden on Saturday, he took the win by almost three minutes in a good field, clocking 49-55 to leave CC Luton's Ashley Cox second with 52-40.

There was another cracking performance over 25 miles, this time in the Veterans TTA Championships at Marlow in Buckinghamshire where Rob Pears clocked 50-29 to take a double victory.

The 50-year-old Bath CC rider won on both actual time and on standard, having a ‘plus' of 17:33 which was just over a minute and a half better than runner-up Brian Camfield (Stone Wheelers).

Meanwhile, Sri Chinmoy CT's Tejvan Pettinger took victory in the Gloucester City CC 25 at Ashton Keynes in Wiltshire. His time of 51-20 was just 12 seconds quicker than runner-up Jon Wynn (Northover VT).

Victory in the Icknield Road Club 100 at Tempsford in Bedfordshire on Sunday went to Steve Berry (Team Swift) who clocked 3-40-53. After a fast first 50 miles, he hung on with determination to take the win by 52 seconds from High Wycombe CC's Lee Tunnicliffe.

Over 50 miles, there was a great performance from junior Dan Coleman (Pembrokeshire Velo) who won the Bynea CC event on the R50/5 Llandovery to Brecon course by around a minute and a half.

He clocked 1-57-12 to beat Oliver Simon (Tenby Aces), while another Tenby rider, veteran Nick Brown, took third, over three and a half minutes further back.

The V718 course in East Yorkshire continues to attract riders in search of fast times, and on Saturday it bore witness to a new women's tandem record, with Ythan CC pair Fiona Duncan and Lora Turnham clocking 19-56 at the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 10-mile event at South Cave.

Their time was five seconds quicker than the old record which has stood since 2008, and they went close last season in preparation for the 2012 Paralympics. They broke the record despite riding a spoked machine instead of disc wheels.

The solo event saw Team Swift dominate the top four, with Andy Jackson taking the win with 18-52.

AW Cycles rider Nick English proved fastest in the Oxford City RC 10 on the Witney bypass in Oxfordshire, clocking 20-29 to win by just two seconds from Danny Axford (SRAM RT).

Despite a breeze, times generally proved a bit faster than the previous week when the same course was used for the Fairly United CC event, and five riders went under 21 minutes.

In the Eastern Counties CA 25-mile Championship St Ives CC rider Peter Balls took the win with 55-51, 12 seconds quicker than runner-up Adam French (Rapha Condor).

And in Northamptonshire, Tim Smith (Welland Valley CC) won the Northants and District CRA 20.8-mile event, clocking 46-45 to win by just nine seconds from Geoff Platts (MG Décor) who was riding a 1955-style machine.
