Although it was only established in 2004, Rapha has quickly established a reputation for stylish, well made cycling clothing. However, as a luxury brand, the price of Rapha products is often prohibitively expensive and hard to justify for many cyclists.
To this end Rapha has launched its new Core range. According to Rapha “The Core range combines clean, tone-on-tone styling with technical fabrics and thoughtful detailing. The jersey, available in a men’s and women’s version, is designed to fit comfortably while on a bike.”
Rapha was keen to stress that this isn’t budget, Tesco Value range Rapha, but instead a more affordable line that is intended for everyday use, rather than just Sunday best. At £75 for the jersey and £100 for the bib shorts, this is still an expensive product, but significantly less expensive than other Rapha products such as the £200 Pro Team Thermal Bibs.
The fabric can be described as soft and breathable. Using a single fabric throughout the garments is one of the ways Rapha has kept the cost down. Features on the jersey include three pockets and colour matched zips, as well as colour matched Rapha logos. At present, the Core range just includes shorts and jerseys, but we suspect this will be expanded.
If you were wondering about the quality, we can report that both the men’s and women’s shorts use the same chamois pads as found in Rapha’s Classic and Pro Team ranges. The garments also feature laser cut hems, silicone grippers and flatlock stitching. Overall, having tried on the new garments in the flesh, our first impression is positive.
