Matt Bottrill sets new 50-mile time trial competition record
British time trial round-up (June 28-29): News and results from around the UK
Matt Bottrill celebrated his 37th birthday in fine style on Saturday, slashing 44 seconds from the national competition record for 50 miles in the Burton and District CA event in Derbyshire on Saturday.
The drag2zero.com rider managed to average 31.6mph as he stopped the clock on 1:34:43. The time was enough to smash the record previously set by Michael Hutchinson in 2008 by an impressive 44 seconds.
Adam Topham of High Wycombe CC took second place with a time of 1:38:27 and third was Tejvan Pettinger of Sri Chinmoy CT in 1:39:36.
Speaking after his achievement, Bottrill said: “It was a great feeling knowing you’re riding so fast and the truth was I really wanted to hurt myself, proving I’m still a great rider and that when in full flight aerodynamically, I have one of the best set ups out there. It was a great feeling and a nice way to celebrate my birthday.”
VeloRefined Aerosmiths dominated the Thanet RC 25 in Kent on Sunday with Michael Barnes winning and Andrew Meilak finishing in second place.
Barnes completed the course in 55:22 – 12 seconds quicker than his team mate. Meilak only just snatched second place with PMR@Toachim House’s Chris Fennell less than a second off his time.
Keith Murray racked up his latest victory, cruising to the fastest time at the Otley CC 50-mile time trial on the Boroughbridge to Knayton course on Sunday.
