After a testing team time trial on the opening day, the Vuelta a España served up a gentle introduction to the road race stages of this year’s race with a pan flat route through the south of France from Nîmes to Gruisson.

The 203km route would help the race transition from its start in the ancient French city to Spain, and it would give the non-climbers the first of few opportunities for victory in this year’s mountainous race.
With the course skirting along the coast for much of the time, wind could play a factor in the events of the day and there could be the possibility of more GC splits if anyone gets caught out.
Rohan Dennis, who took the leader’s red jersey on the opening day after his BMC Racing team won the team time trial, will look to defend his slender lead heading into the first mountain test in Andorra on stage three on Monday.
