Performance Chef Alan Murchison explains why incorporating these ingredients in smoothie form hits the spot in terms of palatability as well as nutritional goodness.

“This smoothie tastes great and is genuinely a pleasure to drink after a hard ride. The nutritional benefits of beetroot are well known, but on its own it tastes awful; this is a great way to consume it without wanting to gag!”

This recipe can also be halved in size if you require smaller portions.

Serves 2
■ 400ml beetroot juice
■ 400ml apple juice
■ 2 whole apples
■ 300g frozen blueberries
■ 3 ripe bananas
■ Handful of ice cubes

Put all of the ingredients into a blender and blast on full power for 30-45 seconds, according to how smooth you like the consistency of your smoothie.
