One of the great things about smoothies is their ability to jam in tonnes of nutrients, whilst still tasting great.
This smoothie is no different as it is packed full of healthy fruit such as apples, blueberries and bananas. Before being topped off with apple and beetroot juice, crucial for boosting nitrate stores.

Performance Chef Alan Murchison explains why incorporating these ingredients in smoothie form hits the spot in terms of palatability as well as nutritional goodness.

This recipe can also be halved in size if you require smaller portions.
■ 400ml beetroot juice
■ 400ml apple juice
■ 2 whole apples
■ 300g frozen blueberries
■ 3 ripe bananas
■ Handful of ice cubes
Put all of the ingredients into a blender and blast on full power for 30-45 seconds, according to how smooth you like the consistency of your smoothie.
