Tom Dumoulin‘s dream of taking the Tour de France yellow jersey at home in the Netherlands last July did not come true but he more than made up for it on the first stage of the 2016 Giro d’Italia.

Taking the win by a fraction of a second, the Butterfly of Maastricht took his team’s first victory of the season and with it the race leader’s pink jersey.

This video from Giant-Alpecin takes fans behind the scenes on the day of the time trial, from the riders warming up, to the race against the clock, and finally to Dumoulin being declared the winner.

The 25-year-old held the pink jersey after stage two, which was won with ease by Marcel Kittel, but could lose it to the German after stage three as a result of time bonuses.

Dumoulin has talked down his chances of winning the overall, instead targeting the time trial stages, but after his performance at the 2015 Vuelta a España it would be premature to count him out entirely.
