CW’s top 30 British riders of 2009: No. 23

No. 23 Alex Dowsett
Last year’s position: N/A
A superb seventh place in the under-23 time trial at the World Championships in Mendrisio was the culmination of a year’s progress on the road for Dowsett.

The 21-year-old also won the under-23 title at the British time trial championships.

But his result at the Worlds has secured him a place with the Trek-Livestrong under-23 team for 2010. Initially Dowsett had agreed a deal with Rapha Condor, but manager John Herety agreed to release him if there was an approach from a Pro Continental team. However, recognising the potential of a move to Trek-Livestrong, Herety did not stand in Dowsett’s way.

In Mendrisio, Dowsett was just 44 seconds down on Australia’s Jack Bobridge, who has signed for Garmin.

Dowsett also won the Richmond Grand Prix Premier Calendar race in 2009.

If all goes well in 2009, it will be no surprise if Dowsett turns professional this time next year.
