As Mark Cavendish rocketed across the line for his first Tour de France stage win at Châteauroux today, his mother was in front of her television at home on the Isle of Man, shouting him on.
Seconds later, we rang for her reaction to her son?s historic victory.
?Oh, absolutely superb,? cried a breathless Mrs Cavendish. ?And it was a fantastic finish, a fantastic finish. I?m a little bit superstitious. If I?d watched the full race I felt sure he might not win. And so I just came in for the last 15 minutes.?
?I didn?t think I?d have the nerve to watch. I?ve been out but I once I got home I had to put it on. I watched the last 15 minutes. And, Oh! He?s just done it.?
Did she have any company for the famous victory? ?No. I?m on my own. It was just as well. I was shouting, shouting at the television, I must admit. I don?t know want else to say. It?s absolutely marvelous. Absolutely superb. He always wanted to win a stage of the Tour de France and he?s gone and done it. I?m going to phone him in about an hour.?
