If you want to ride a time trial as fast as Bradley Wiggins, then a good pair of aero wheels are a sensible place to start. And just to make sure that you’re buying the best on the market, how about a set that were raced by the man himself?
Currently on sale on eBay is a pair of wheels that were apparently raced to victory by Wiggins at the 2010 British national time trial championships. The Zipp 900 carbon rear disc wheel and Zipp 808 Firecrest front wheel both come without decals (owing to Team Sky‘s sponsorship deal with Shimano) and come with leaded balance weights for even rotation. Both wheels are clad with Veloflex Criterium tubular tyres, and a 10-speed Shimano Dura-Ace cassette is thrown into the package too.
However you’ll have to move fast on the auction, with the sale ending just before 10pm tonight. And you’ll have to have some pretty deep pockets too, with the current asking price being £1250 (plus a hefty £35 delivery charge) even before any bids have been made.
One thing is for certain, these are certainly very fast wheels, with Wiggins finishing the 2010 national championships 1min 23sec clear of Chris Froome. However this victory came at the end of a turgid season for Wiggins, having finished the Tour de France in 24th place, almost forty minutes behind eventual winner Andy Schleck.
