Bob Jungels: ‘Thanks for the support, but I’m not Niki Terpstra’

Bob Jungels reveals he was receiving a lot of support from the Dutch fans at the Amstel Gold Race because they thought he was Niki Terpstra

Bob Jungels (Etixx-Quick Step) was surprisingly popular among the home fans at the Amstel Gold Race but it may have been a case of mistaken identity.

The Dutch fans are very passionate about cycling, and especially encouraging one of their own, so when the crowds in the Limburg region of the Netherlands saw a rider in red white and blue stripes going past they cheered on who they thought was their national champion.

But instead of hollering for Niki Terpstra, they were actually cheering for Luxembourg champion Jungels, and the 23-year-old took to Twitter afterwards to explain the confusion.

It’s an easy mistake to make. Their kits are almost completely identical. Both are topped by a red stripe, followed underneath by a white stripe and then a blue stripe.

Jungels’ blue strip is slightly lighter than Terpstra’s, but as the riders whizz past it’s quite easy to miss such a detail.
