Impact on GC 2/5
Following a rest day transfer that takes the riders from the Netherlands all the way down to the Calabria region in southern Italy, things get going again starting at the city of Catanzaro, the race’s southernmost point.
A return to Italy means a return of hills, and most of the final 80km is uphill and downhill, featuring two categorised climbs. This is the Giro after all, and three successive flat stages would be inconceivable.
Race leader Marcel Kittel (Etixx-QuickStep) will face a major challenge to defend his jersey. He can expect attacks from anyone within shooting distance of the top of GC, especially on the unclassified uphill rise within the final 10km. However, this should still come down to a bunch finish – and the opportunity for Kittel to take his first Giro stage win on Italian soil.
