Maratona dles Dolomites 2012: Cycling Weekly readers’ experience

Once again, Cycling Weekly took 300 readers to northern Italy for the Maratona dles Dolomites which took place on July 1.

This year we decided to make a short film of the CW experience, interviewing as many of the readers as we could.

The film will be out shortly so just watch this space. We also managed a word or two with a rather special geezer – the pic below is to whet your appetite.

It was an absolute scorcher and touched 40 degrees Centigrade at one point in the afternoon – which resulted in one CW rider suffering heatstroke on The Giau, the hardest climb, and having to be scooped up by the broom wagon.

He was fine afterwards and was just as thrilled with the event as the rest of the CW group. The feedback about it from the readers, as always, has been glowing!

The event was won again by Jamie Burrow, so congratulations to him.

A few comments about the event from riders…

Many thanks for allocating the 6 entries to Fulontri for this year’s event. Everyone had an amazing weekend and really enjoyed the race, stunning scenery and the welcoming atmosphere. It’s always sad to leave Corvara after the event as the whole Maratona experience is very special. A number of us are already thinking about returning again next year.
Alex Little

The whole event was awesome! I hope to do it again next year.

On behalf of everyone at Southdown Velo and Biking Belles I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your support and help which enabled us to compete in the Maratona. As you know, the event is far, far more than the cycle race. There were some extraordinary examples of personal achievement and teamwork from the groups and I think everyone returned from Italy with some very special memories. We are all very grateful Cycling Weekly and to the organisers in Italy.

Just a quick note to thank you for making this possible. Memories of the suffering are still quite vivid, but I’m sure the rose tinted specs will be soon found and along with renewed enthusiasm for having another crack at it. Many thanks

I would like to thank you for organising the entry into the event which was wonderful and will be forever etched in my mind. It was my first time in mountains as a cyclist and one I will never forget. If there is another opportunity to go again next year please can I be considered. Once again thank you and I look forward to buying the edition of CW showing the event.
Mark Trimmer

It was a fantastic event. Having done 4 Etape du Tours and two Marmottes, this ranked right at the top of the list in terms of organisation and experience with stunning roads and scenery.
Ian Simpson

Just a short note to say a huge thank you – it was a truly outstanding day, and having watched the riders in the Giro go up the Giau this year, and now having done it myself, my admiration only grows!
