Distances: 44, 80, 103 miles
Terrain: Rolling, with two big hills towards the end.
Best Bit: Box Hill
Worst bit: Yep you guessed it: the weather!
Waking up on the morning of a ride to the sound of heavy rain should see you crawl back under the duvet and dream of bacon sandwiches.
But that would be too easy, so along with 1,350 other riders we rolled into Epsom Racecourse to moan about the weather before riding the Box Hill Original. Thirty of those people entered the ride on the day – true dedication or insanity, I can’t decide.
With the rain set to get heavier during the day, all riders were advised to do the short route of 44 miles, which we had decided to do anyway. Kudos to the 100 or so who did the full epic route.
The route took riders down to Epsom before turning back up the hill, on to the Downs and out in to the Surrey Hills. There were no major climbs before the feed station (after 30 miles) where we spoke in hushed tones of taking a short-cut.
I decided I couldn’t live with the guilt of quitting, so we soldiered on. A big climb up onto Ranmore, against the stream of water, warmed us up before taking on Box Hill.
Despite the dismal weather, the route really was beautiful and made all the effort worth while. With mud-splattered smiles, we made it back to the finish to receive our well-earned medals.
Missed it? Try this…
