Andreas Klöden career profile

2000 was the German's breakthrough season with an overall win at the Tour of the Basque Country.

Klöden then disappeared off the radar, after three consecutive seasons were lost to injury.
He reappeared in 2004, took the German national road race title and took a surprise second overall in the Tour de France, after toppling Ivan Basso from the second step of the podium in the final time trial.
It was a race in which he should have been a domestique for Jan Ullrich after all, but it cemented his reputation as a co-leader at T-Mobile.
His 2005 Tour chances were wrecked after a crash resulted in a broken wrist. In 2006, Operacion Puerto erupted on the eve of the Tour, bringing down Ullrich in a sea of controversy.
Klöden stepped into the role of outright team leader and was second overall once again, following the disqualification of Floyd Landis for a positive dope test.
A move to Astana followed in 2007, but the German (along with the rest of his team-mates) was disqualified in the wake of Alexander Vinokourov failing a drugs test.
Staying with the Astana team, Klöden appeared content to play domestique duties in the Grand Tours, helping team-mate Alberto Contador to an historic Giro d'Italia/Vuelta a España double in 2008.
Klöden stayed with the Astana team for the 2009 season, where his Grand Tour ambitions were again put on hold, with both Contador and Lance Armstrong on the team.
Klöden then jumped ship to Armstrong's RadioShack outift for 2010.
