A cyclist is in a critical condition in hospital after being struck by a car at an accident blackspot in London.

The incident happened just after 6pm on Monday evening and the cyclist suffered severe head injuries, according to The Evening Standard.

A City of London Police spokeswoman said the man, thought to be in his 40s, suffered life-threatening injuries.

The driver is helping police with their investigation into the incident after stopping at the scene.

The junction has been the scene of a number of incidents and cycle campaigners have held protests there to highlight has dangerous it is for cyclists and pedestrians.

The newly elected Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has vowed to push on with improvements to cycling infrastructure started under his predecessor.

Plans for the new Cycle Superhighway 11 have been given the go ahead, but large junctions such as the one at Bank will need to be looked at if significant safety improvement for cyclists are to be made in the capital.
