Hot topic: can tomatoes lower stroke risk?

According to a Finnish study, the power antioxidant, lycopene (found in tomatoes) can significantly reduce the risk of having a stroke.

The research, which is to be published in the Neurology journal, reviewed data from more than 1,000 middle-aged men over 12 years. The results showed that those with the highest levels of lycopene in their blood had a 55 per cent lower chance of suffering from a stroke.

Researchers also looked at a number of other antioxidants, but didn’t find any link with stroke risk.
