London Nocturne will kick off ‘sensational summer of cycling’, says Boris Johnson

Mayor of London Boris Johnson gets behind London Nocturne, taking place on Saturday June 7

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has hailed the London Nocturne night-time event on Saturday June 7 as the start of a ‘sensational summer of cycling’ in the capital, which also includes visits by the Tour de France, Tour of Britain and Prudential RideLondon.

“Exactly a month before the Tour de France rolls into our great city, the London Nocturne will kick-start another sensational summer of cycling in the capital,” said Johnson.

“Londoners shouldn’t miss the chance to see Penny Farthings, folding bikes and even Barclays Cycle Hire bikes race around historic Smithfield Market. This free event has grown every year since 2007 and I’m sure the 2014 London Nocturne will be the best yet.”

Last year the free-to-watch event attracted 15,000 spectators, who lined the 1.1-kilometre circuit in and around the historic Smithfield Market. Tom Scully and Hannah Barnes won last year’s elite criterium events.

This year’s Barclays Cycle Hire bike race will pit 30 riders against each other for five laps of the race circuit. Participants will be chosen via Transport for London’s Facebook page, and the event’s winner will receive a year’s free membership to the cycle hire scheme.

James Pope of London Nocturne organiser FACE Partnership said: “This year’s London Nocturne is set to be the best yet and will feature teams who will be racing the streets of London again a few weeks later in the Tour de France. Team Sky, Garmin-Sharp and Net-App Endura will line up against the leading British teams with Olympic and World Champions battling against road stars like Tyler Farrar and Josh Edmondson.

“We’re delighted to include the Barclays Cycle Hire Race in the programme for the first time – the sight of a peloton of Barclays Cycle Hire bikes is set to be one of this year’s highlights.”
