Renshaw, Petacchi and Yates brothers confirmed for RideLondon

Strong 2014 startlist comes as a result of event's improved UCI ranking.

Sprinters aplenty will ride this Sunday’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic (August 10), 12 months after the inaugural edition of the capital’s Olympic cycling legacy event culminated on The Mall in a bunch gallop.

Australian Mark Renshaw and Italian Alessandro Petacchi will spearhead Omega Pharma-Quick Step’s charge, although the loss of Mark Cavendish following his Tour de France crash will blunt their potency somewhat.

Chris Sutton and Ben Swift – who finished ninth and 10th in 2013 – were also confirmed today by the event organiser.

The highest-finisher from the first-ever edition of the Classic, which starts in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and largely retraces the route of the Olympic road races in 2012, is NetApp-Endura’s Zak Dempster. The Australian, who finished sixth last year, has just finished his first Tour de France.

Simon and Adam Yates will represent Orica-GreenEdge in the race, although fledgling young talent Caleb Ewan is arguably one to watch in his first race for the team ahead of a permanent move in 2014.

Philippe Gilbert (BMC) had previously been confirmed as one of the participants, while Britain’s domestic teams will be hoping that the likes of Adam Blythe (NFTO) and Chris Opie (Rapha Condor JLT) will be able to mix it with the WorldTour professionals if it comes down to a bunch gallop.

This year’s race will be run with hors catégorie status, the second-highest ranking for any professional event. The 192-kilometre race, which includes ascents of Staple Lane, Leith Hill and Box Hill, begins in Stratford at 1pm.
