Wiggins wears the number one plate and will undoubtedly we welcomed by loud cheers wherever he goes on his unofficial ‘lap of honour’ after such an incredible season.

It will be Cavendish’s final race in the rainbow jersey before the 2012 World Championships in the Netherlands later in the month.

Ivan Basso leads Italian outfit Liquigas-Cannondale, with American sprinter Tyler Farrar heading up Garmin-Sharp’s squad.

Spanish 2008 Olympic road race champion Samuel Sanchez leads Euskaltel-Euskadi and Australian team Orica-GreenEdge makes its debut at the race with a strong line-up that includes Jack Bobridge, Michael Hepburn and Leigh Howard.

The domestic teams are no less well represented, and many people will be watching how Endura fares against the WorldTour outfits on home turf. Jonathan Tiernan-Locke spearheads the team’s overall aspirations, with Russell Downing aiming for stage wins.

Magnus Backstedt and Yanto Barker are part of UK Youth’s roster, and they’ll be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Kristian House (Rapha Condor), Daniel Lloyd (IG-Sigma Sport), Marcin Bialoblocki (Node4), Russell Hampton (Raleigh-GAC) and Graham Briggs (Raleigh-GAC).

A Great Britain under-23 development team was also allowed to ride at the last minute.
