The riders will face a revised, but no less challenging stage part-way up Mont Ventoux after the last-minute shortening of the stage due to high wind speeds.

Crosswinds will still have to be navigated before the climb, though, which some teams will use to try to split things. If they are strong, the winds could have a bearing on the winner of the stage, just as they did on the remarkable finish the previous day in Montpellier.

The contenders’ teams carry a big responsibility to shepherd their leaders to the bottom of Mont Ventoux, then some will have the luxury of a train to set the pace for them on the early slope. However, there will come a point when the contenders must put their best foot forward and do their job.

Ventoux stages are always fascinating. They always build slowly but always explode when they reach the climb. This will be gripping to watch on TV, and unbelievable to witness in the flesh.

Chris Froome (Sky) goes into the day as race leader, having extended his advantage at the top of the general classification on stage 11. Froome took advantage of crosswinds to attack with Peter Sagan (Tinkoff), Geraint Thomas (Sky) and Maciej Bodnar (Tinkoff) in the last 10km. Sagan took the win, and Froome now sits 28 seconds ahead of Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange) overall.
