Geraint Thomas took the biggest win of his career at Paris-Nice in March 2016, but it almost wasn’t to be, when Alberto Contador attacked from distance on the final stage.

Thomas took the race lead on the penultimate stage by finishing second to Ilnur Zakarin on the climb of the Col de la Madone, taking an advantage of 15 seconds over Contador into the final stage around the Col d’Eze.

Contador made one of his trademark attacks with around 50km to go on the lumpy stage, gaining a winning advantage over the Welsh rider with a strong breakaway group helping out.

Thomas, an ambassador for Protect Your Bubble, didn’t seem fazed, though, working well with teammate Sergio Henao, who emptied the tank to help the 2015 E3 Harelbeke winner back to within reach of Contador.

Sitting on the sunny terrace of Chateau Eza in the Eze village, he tells Cycling Weekly why he fitted a 54-tooth chainring to his bike ahead of the final stage – a decision that could have possibly won him the race – and points out the memorable places along the final stage of the race.
