The Premier Calendar is Britain’s flagship road race series.

It started life as the Star Trophy in 1959, when John Perks was the overall champion.

The competition was often fierce and the winner could rightly pronounce himself Britain’s best road racer of the year.

In 1993, the competition was rebranded the Premier Calendar. There have been ups and downs since, reflecting the difficulties of organising events on British roads.

Back in 1994 there were 14 Premier Calendar events. Of those, only the Girvan stage race, the Lincoln Grand Prix and the Grand Prix of Wales survive and only the Lincoln has had an uninterrupted run.

The low point in the competition’s history was in 2006, when just seven races made up the series, but since then there has been a resurgence.

There are ten events in the 2008 Premier Calendar series and with the East Midlands Cicle Classic and the Grand Prix of Wales enjoying international status, the domestic road racing scene is looking healthy.

John Tanner has won the most Premier Calendar titles, with five. New Zealander Gordon McCauley was the only overseas winner, in 1999.

This is Cycling Weekly‘s database of Premier Calendar race winners, stretching back to 1993. You’ll find the races and the top three finishers as we add the results over the coming weeks.
