Long before carbon seatposts and internally cabled electronic groupsets, real cyclists battled it out on the roads and mountains of continental Europe.
In the decade following Eddy Merckx‘s domination of the world of cycling, big names came and went but few got close to emulating the Cannibal. Some fans might also look back on the 1980s as the last decade not to be impacted upon by a certain Texan whirlwind.

Rattling their way over the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix or grinding through the mountains on a Grand Tour, these photos show the riders at their best (or perhaps worst, judging by some of the facial expressions).
In honour of some of the less well known, but not totally obscure, names and faces of the 80s peloton, we’ve been through the photo archives and picked out a selection of riders for this week’s cycling quiz. Avoiding the obvious big stars like Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond, how many of these professional cyclists can you identify?
