The riders faced the second summit finish of the race to the exceptionally difficult Blockhaus climb. If the first summit finish to Mount Etna was somewhat of an anti-climax thanks to the headwind, Blockhaus would surely stage the spectacle we've all been waiting for between the GC contenders.
A true icon of cycling, the Blockhaus climb has staged a number of spectacular finishes in the Giro, and its difficulty would certainly mean this would unlikely be a day for the breakaway.
