French newspaper L?Equipe has claimed that Saunier Duval – whose star rider Riccardo Ricco tested positive for EPO during the Tour – have pulled out of cycling.
Officials from the company held a meeting yesterday in Germany on Tuesday to decide the fate of the team after Ricco?s high-profile positive.
A few days ago, the Saunier Duval riders – apart from the Italian and his room-mate Leonardo Piepoli, sacked by Saunier for ?violating their internal ethics code? – published a letter asserting their innocence and claiming Ricco was an isolated case.
But the news that the Tour of Germany had said they did not want the squad on the race in any shape or form was hardly encouraging for the sponsor.
If confirmed, the news represents a major blow for Spanish cycling, which will be left with just two ProTour teams – Caisse d?Epargne and Euskaltel-Euskadi.
