giro d’italiaAfter Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) well-and-truly stamped his authority on the Giro d’Italia with victory on Sunday’s stage to Sappada, stage 16 sees a crucial time trial that will go a long way to deciding the overall winner of the race.
With the climbers having had fun in the mountains in the last couple of days before a rest day on Monday, stage 16 sees the riders face a 34.2km time trial on largely flat and untechnical valley roads between Trento and Rovereto.

In the battle for the stage win, world champion Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) is the favourite, but will face stiff opposition from the likes of Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin), Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing), and Victor Campenaerts (LottoNL-Jumbo).
However Dumoulin’s main concern will be taking time on Yates, with the Dutchman coming into the stage 2-11 behind Yates and probably needing to get all that time and a bit more back if he is going to be able to stand a chance of standing on the top step of the podium in Rome.
After the strain of the time trial, the GC riders will be hoping that stage 17 and its largely flat profile will probe to be an easier day. The remaining sprinters will be hoping to bring things back together for a bunch sprint, but are likely to face a tough battle against the breakaway.
