Giro d’Italia 2013: Stage 12
When: Thursday, May 16
The Giro d’Italia continues to commemorate the Vajont Dam victims with its stage start in Longarone, a town almost completely destroyed in 1963. Once out of town, the sprints and GC teams need to keep eye on their rivals because, at only 127km, there will not be much time to react.
Two climbs will cause some trouble, but not much for the sprint teams. They should control the stage and see to a sprint – as when the Giro first visited in 1927, when Alfredo Binda won, or when it last visited, in 2004, when Alessandro Petacchi won.
Though flat, the stage winds its way through Treviso’s centre before reaching the finish line. On a similar run-in last year, in Frosinone, a crash with Matt Goss and Filippo Pozzato derailed Cavendish and saw Francisco Ventoso zip ahead for the win.
Find a bar with a TV along the finishing straight, order your share of spritz, Aperol with locally produced prosecco, and pass the hours. There are plenty of great restaurants in town, so find one, sneak in and eat early because the next day you must visit the headquarters of Pinarello.
