Dangerous conditions early in the day initially led to the cancellation of the junior and U23 races, but with the wind failing to die down, the men’s and women’s elite races were also cancelled.
The cancellation was broadly welcomed by riders, with Ian Field calling the conditions “fundamentally dangerous” and Wout Van Aert praising the organisers for making a “brave decision”.
However a few of the Czech contingent decided to stick around anyway, making use of the dunes to practice their sand riding skills, which as you can see from the video above, could do with a bit of work.
The good news is that such high winds gave perfect conditions for the Dutch Headwind Championships, which also took place on Sunday.
