In many respects the decade immediately after the turn of the millennium was a torrid time in the world of professional cycling.

The prolific doping that had marred the mid- to late-1990s continued almost unabated for much of the early part of the new decade leaving results lists peppered with crossed-out names or asterisks indicating a change of winner after a race had finished.
However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom and there was still some quality racing going on. Heading towards the end of the decade things started to look up as the new generation of (mostly) clean riders matured into the leaders of the peloton, and British cycling really took off and began its transformation into what we see today.
